October 1, 2007: noiseLAB 3.0 now shipping. This exciting new release provides a wide range of features described below.

This is a free upgrade for existing users. To download the new version click on “Demo Downloads” to the left. Your existing license key will unlock the new version. The same download also runs in a demo version.

ISO 1996-2 Second Editionwas published in early 2007. The new standard is entitled “Acoustics- Description, Measurement and Assessment of Environmental Noise. Part 2, Measurement of environmental noise levels. Significant new methods are introduced in the standard for tone analysis based on psychoacoustic principles. This technology was primarily developed by Torben Holm Pedersen of DELTA now a party of FORCE Technology.

noiseLAB 3.0 is compliant to the tone analysis techniques in Annex C of this standard.

noiseLAB 3.0 is a major upgrade of noiseLAB with a broad range of new, powerful features.

  • Automatic Tone Analysis to ISO 1996-2 Annex C
  • Support of more hardware: Now you can import .wav files from Sound Level Meters (such as the Brüel & Kjær 2250 and Svantek 959) and hard disk recorders.

Examples of Applications with noiseLAB 3.0

  • Automatic identification of tones according to the new ISO 1996-2 Standard. Tone identification and computation of Tonal Audibility Delta Lta, Individual and Total Tone Level Lpt, and Masking Noise Level Lpn, as well as the Tone Adjustment KT.
  • Automatic generation of Sound Level Plots as a function of time. For example, with a Sound Clip one hour long, set your Car Length to 300 seconds, and hit the Save Plot button, and 12 JPEG plots (each 5 minutes long), with your selected scaling and correct annotation are automatically generated.
  • Automatic computation of short-term/long-term Leq. In the above example, noiseLAB will automatically compute the Leq for each “Car” and for the sum of all cars. In addition, Sound level Max, Min, Peak, and Ln are also computed.
  • Use your sound level meter as a “hard disk” recorder. If it can record .wav files, you can use noiseLAB 3.0 to make a broad range of measurements. With the speed and user-friendliness of the PC, you have quickly customize your measurement results.
  • Batch Process Flexility: Assume you have 4 one-hour long Sound Clips and want to look at the data in 10 minute intervals. The process is simple: Select the four Clips and select the types of measurements you want to make: Sound Level, Octave Analysis, FFT, Tone. Set the Train Analysis Car Durationg to 10 minutes. Press the Analyze button and you will automatically get all of the following:
  1. Sound Level: Leq, LE, Sound Level, Peak, Impulse, Ltaktmax (both 3 and 5 seconds) and L1, L5, L10, L50, L90, L95 and L99.
  2. Octave: Choose from 1/1, 1/3, 1/6, 1/12, and 1/24 octave. The Linear average (Leq) of the Octave spectrum over the Car Duration, plus over the entire Clip. In addition, you can also get the A and G infrasound weighted values
  3. Spectrum: Compute the linear average of the FFT spectrum. (You can choose from a wide range of Windows: Hanning, Flat-top, Lowsidelobe, Blackman-Harris, etc.)
  4. Tone Analysis: Provides a complete list of all tone parameters required by the ISO 1996-2 standard. The list of critical bands is automatically sorted to show the most audible critical band first.
  5. Car Analysis: All of these values are computed for each 10 minute “Car” interval, along with the values for the total of all cars.
  6. Sum of Clips: In addition, the total values for each of the four clips are also computed.
  7. Export of data: Graphic or table form.
  • Automatic tone analysis for frequency varying tones. Using the “Train Analysis” capability, you can break a recording into shorter time intervals. noiseLAB Professional will automatically identify tones in each of these clips, and you can automatically output the graphs of these tones with a single mouse click.


noiseLAB 3.0 consists of the following components:

  • noiseLAB Classic
  • noiseLAB Batch Processor

The Classic component of noiseLAB is very similar to Version 2.1 with a focus on ease of data acqusition, editing, and basic analysis and reporting. It has been enhanced to support import of .wav files, complete with calibration support.

The Batch Processor is designed for the more advanced user who requires flexibility and sophisticated processing of large amounts of data.

When you purchase noiseLAB, the Batch Processor is included in the Advanced and Professional Editions. The major differences between the two editions are the following

  • Advanced: Automatic Tone Analysis, 1/1 and 1/3 octave analysis G & A infrasound.
  • Professional: The following additional functions: 1/6, 1/12, and 1/24 octave analysis. Train Analysis. interactive Editing of Tone calculation parameters.
